SPAM (a.k.a. still more Avatar whoring)
Okay, I just watched the series finale.

1) It was kickass.

2) OKAY, I ADMIT IT. I have officially been converted to OTP'ing Katara/Zuko. It's not just one of my multiships anymore; it is my O-T-fucking-P of this series, silly as that may be. Certain bits of the fandom may make me wince, but hey, that's every ship's fandom. Fandom in general, even.

My heart was pounding towards the end of this thing. Order of the White Lotus = SO MUCH WIN, and oh my god, I cried during Zuko's reunion with Iroh. Iroh, I ♥ you forever and ever. The scene with Azula at the mirror and the image of her mother twisted my heartstrings so hard, though - because for all that she's crazy and bloodthirsty and really fucking scary, Azula is such a fundamentally tragic character.

Which brings us to the her showdown with Zuko. I admit I didn't really give a shit about Aang's fight with the Fire Lord (besides, I pretty much predicted the ending from a mile away), because I was so fixated on the sibling showdown. It was just gorgeously done, with all that dramatic music in the background; it wasn't so much about showing how this is another Epic Kickass Avatar Battle Sequence, but a final battle between siblings, and that broke my heart.

And, oh, Zuko. The way he asked Katara to come with him, and when he realized that Azula was going to aim the lightning at her, and how he FUCKING TOOK THE LIGHTNING FOR HER. And the scene when she heals him - right there. That is where they became my OTP, and oh good god, how I wanted an on-screen kiss right then and there. SHIPSHIPSHIPSHIP.

And then the Mai/Zuko kiss happened. And in perfect honesty, I wouldn't have minded several episodes ago, because I actually sort of liked that ship, but the show just never really did the relationship any justice, so the pairing just felt... tacked on. *headdesk* They could have done without it. And really, after that scene with Zuko and Katara, I couldn't find it in me to seriously enjoy any other pairing involving those two. I liked the Katara/Aang scene slightly more - it was sort of sweet, in a way - but as I've said before, I am incapable of shipping Aang with anyone. Well, at least we got Sokka/Suki in all their glorious canon adorable-ness. Though I have to ask - WHERE THE HELL WAS URSA? We see Zuko asking where she is, but we never actually see her. YAAAAARGH.

Still, save the iffy pairings and occasional plot hole, it ended well. I'm glad I watched it, even though now my head is spinning a little, and my heart still feels sort of broken. (Azula. Azula. And oh my god, why did I not realize how much I wanted canon!Zutara - however futile that was - until now. *deskdeskdesk*)

And now I'm even more desperately in need of fic. Specifically really well-written Katara/Zuko. Guhhhh.

Ahahaha. See, I've been recapping the show by watching it with my mother. We were only a few episodes into Season 1 when Mom started trying to convince me that there was something "going on" between Zuko and Katara. So, I had to take the opposite position, I was automatically Maiko and Kataang (although, gotta be honest, I hate shipping Katara with anyone. Now who do I like to ship? Toph. I would love Toko if the opportunity ever arose.)

I know, forget Aang and Ozai, let's keep it to Zuko/Azula!

Hee, I used to be a multishipper (still am, pretty much), and my attitude towards Zutara was more or less, "Oh, why not, it's a crackship, but they'd have pretty babies." And then the third season happened. |D Though I'd probably have loved Zuko/Mai, if they'd actually given it some decent amounts of depth and development. And yes, Toph is awesome in general. ♥

... Weirdly, I think I could ship Mai/Jet. They would be dark and smouldering and angsty together. Except for the part where he's probably dead. Or not. God, I loved "The Ember Island Players," and how this show makes fun of itself.

Pretty babies is a valid ship reason. Fact: half-white half-asian people are pretty. See: Apollo Ohno. Therefore: Harry Potter and Cho Chang are a prettybabies! ship. (... yes, I shipped them. Once upon a more innocent time.)
Mai/Jet - hmm, that might actually work. But she's not, I think, the type to be swept off her feet by his rugged, Enjolras-like charm.
It was almost like the Avatar: The Last Airbender hand puppet movie theater. "I'm Toph - because it sounds like Tough!" *muscle grind* which Toph, of course, just loves.

Pretty babies are an excellent reason to ship something. Though Cedric/Cho probably would've produced prettier ones, Cedric being the gorgeous creature that he is. Was. Whatever.

I do wish Zuko/Mai could've gotten the development it deserved, because I really liked the idea of the pairing when her childhood crush was initially introduced. But, oh, the Katara/Zuko interaction in the third season just made me so happy. (I love Zuko in general, really. Particularly since season three Zuko became so pretty. And his character development, of course, was probably the best of any of the main cast.)

re: Mai/Jet - oh yes, the unlikelihood of her being impressed by his rugged charm is precisely why I could them. She could knock some sense into his head. (... and they would probably also have attractive children, come to think of it.)

And yes, half-white half-Asian people have a tendency to be devastatingly attractive. My cousins on my father's side are all halfies, and all give me a terrible inferiority complex. :P

How very right you are. I hope he donated some of his genetic material to science...

I heard that an alternate idea that the writers were playing with, which was to have Zuko always keep a lava rock shaped like a heart that Mai had given him as children. That makes me go AWWWW inside. If that had been part of canon - imagine how sweet that could have been. Especially if through S. 1 we'd seen him with it sometimes and be like "where did he get it?" then we'd meet Mai...
And Zuko? Pretty? My dear, don't be so modest: he is sex on wheels.

True... true, I can see Jet turning on the Enjolras vibe when Mai walks by and she just strides past, "psh, poseur" and he's all like "How is she immune to me?" *follow*

Aww, don't let that inferiority complex affect you! You're very pretty yourself (unless you've suffered some Phantom-type accident since the last time you were in L.A....) :P

... Heart-shaped lava rock would have been adorable. The way they actually handled the relationship in canon was just sort of sloppy and made me sad. I wish they'd done Mai more justice in general; I rather liked her, but she felt a little too much like a caricature at times.

re: Zuko as sex on wheels - couldn't have said it better myself. Mmmmmm.

Dude, now I want Mai/Jet fic. I may even write it myself. I have no idea why I'm so fond of the idea of shipping two characters who've never even spoken to each other, but who cares, it would be awesomecakes. :D

Awww, thank you. ♥

In canon, yes. In the imagination of willing participants -- I mean shippers... still kind of sloppy in that last episode. He never worried about her at the Boiling Rock?

If you write some, let me know. And have a great time in Hawaii! If you get a chance to walk along a volcano, be sure to throw in some hair or strawberries, or a little alcohol if you have some. Don't take rocks off of the islands where they come from. My mom has a Hawaiian friend who is always getting bagfuls of rocks from tourists who didn't realize that bad luck would follow them as long as the rock was away from its home.
And soak in the aloha!
